There are 14 types of years, or Keviot. The years follow a recurring 19-year pattern of simple and leap years where years 3, 6, 8, 11, 14, 17, and 19 are leap years. Common years of 12 months must be 353, 354, or 355 days long and leap years with an additional month of 30 days must be 383, 384, or 385 days long. The lengths are known as defective, regular, and excessive respectively.
Since there are 14 different kinds of years, there are 14 different orders in which the Torah portions are read, each associated with a keviah.
